THE GASTRIC BYPASS

Illustration of RNY Gastric Bypass procedure

The Gastric Bypass is sometimes described with its more formal medical name –– the Roux-en-Y (roo-en-wy). It is the oldest bariatric procedure in the world with a long history of excellent outcomes. It is performed laparoscopically.

This type of weight-loss surgery involves creating a small pouch from the stomach, then connecting the newly created stomach pouch directly to the small intestine.

After a gastric bypass, your food will first go into this small pouch of stomach and then directly into the small intestine, thereby 'bypassing' both most of your stomach and the first section of your small intestine.

THE RESULT
You feel fuller on smaller amounts of food and the absorption of the food you do eat is reduced.

The Procedure takes 90 Minutes It is not considered to be reversible The average hospital stay is 2 nights
